Commissioner Calls For Independent Monitoring of State of Environment
Measuring and reporting on the health of our environment is a critical issue for NZ says the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment and independent regular assessments are needed.
In a report entitled:
The Commissioner, Dr Jan Wright stated that we need environmental statistics for:
- Diagnosing the health of different parts of our environment
- For identifying the cause of a problem, and
- For telling us the success of our remedies
She has suggested that “a State of the Environment report for the whole country – careful selection of key environmental statistics, aggregated up to the national level, and informatively presented – is one product of environmental statistics.”
Finally she has identified the need for an Environment Reporting Act stating that “New Zealand is the only country in the OECD without an ongoing statutory commitment to regularly reporting on the state of its environment. Yet we brand ourselves as ‘clean and green’.”
