Current conservation status
- Conservation status of New Zealand mosses, 2014 (PDF, 583.87 kB)
The conservation status of 109 New Zealand moss taxa was assessed using the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS). Four taxa and one undescribed entity that were not included in previous assessments have been added to the list. The conservation status of only two taxa has changed in this assessment. A full list is presented, along with a statistical summary and brief notes on the changes. This list replaces all previous NZTCS lists for mosses. Authors: Jeremy R. Rolfe, Allan J. Fife, Jessica E. Beever, Patrick J. Brownsey and Rodney A. Hitchmough.
- Conservation status of New Zealand hornworts and liverworts, 2014 (PDF, 695.44 kB)
The conservation status of the New Zealand hornwort and liverwort flora is reassessed using the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS). A full list is presented, along with a statistical summary and brief notes on the most important changes. This list replaces all previous NZTCS lists for New Zealand hornworts and liverworts which previously had been part of a generic bryophyte conservation status assessment that included mosses. Detailed description
Stout brown moss of wet ground. Stems up to 50 mm tall, simple. Leaves c.5 mm long, somewhat crisped and spreading when dry, erect-patent or spreading when moist, oblong from a slightly widened scarcely sheathing base, obtuse, concave, with margins undulate above, more or less convolute towards the apex and sharply and unequally serrate. Nerve failing below the apex or percurrent, variably toothed on the back above. Lamellae (thin plate or sheet like structures) lax, distant, sinuose, 30-40 (rarely more), comprising 2-3 rows of cells, straight or almost so in side view and with the terminal cell smooth or very faintly papillose. Cells of the widened base shortly rectangular above and lengthened below, not hyaline at the margin. Cells of the lamellate lamina in numerous rows (15 or more), 20-25 µm wide, subquadrate or transversely oval, variably incrassate. Seta c.15 mm tall, stout, curved. Capsule 4 mm long, turgidly ovoid, with a short neck, almost symmetrical; mouth wide and oblique. Peristome wanting.
