Volcanic dunes
The volcanic dunes of the Rangipo desert in Tongariro are made up of drifting sands and gravels formed out of ash, pumice and scoria. These dunes tend to form where there is shelter or where vegetation prevents sand drift. This plant community has been identified by Landcare Research as a historically rare ecosystem type.
