This group is of primary importance due to the threat of Myrtle Rust coming to New Zealand (this fungus is currently established in Australia and New Caledonia).

The group includes kanuka (Kunzea ericoides), manuka (Leptospermum scoparium), a number of endangered species (Kunzea sinclairii, Metrosideros bartlettii, Metrosideros kermadecensis), as well as the more common pohutukawa, rata, and several species of climbing rata.
